December
7 of 2006 journalist got the information from the
"Second International Workshop on Vehicle Emission
Control" co-sponsored by SEPA and EPA that in
order to improve air quality in Chinese cities and
reduce the vehicle emission, from December 31 of 2009
China will eliminate the motor unleaded gasoline with
500ppm sulfur content, and the cleaner gasoline with
150ppm sulfur content will be the replacement.
The Deputy Director of Pollution Department of
SEPA Xinmin-Li said in the workshop that so far
the auto industry is developing fast in China, and
only the auto products in the first ten months of
2006 had reached 6.21 million, therefore China was
expected to be the third auto produce and consume
country in the world. However, there are still 40%
cities whose air quality is worse than the second
level, and the problem on the environment quality
is still serious.
Therefore, China has strengthened the vehicle emission
control. Since eliminated the leaded gasoline around
the whole country in 2000, China began the program
on lowering the sulfur content in gasoline. By the
end of this year the newly revised standard of "Motor
Unleaded Gasoline" will be issued. According
to the latest standard, the existing gasoline with
500ppm sulfur content will out off the market. The
principal of SINOPEC said that they would go on
developing and researching the motor fuel with lower
sulfur content, and would try to reduce the sulfur
to less than 150ppm, then SINOPEC can provide the
motor diesels compliant with Euro III standard.
